The needs of law enforcement are
constantly changing, and Smith & Wesson is always developing
sophisticated new tools to answer them. |
Almost every police department in the United States uses Smith
& Wesson products, and at some time or another, every major law
enforcement and military agency in the country has relied on our
high-performance crime-fighting tools. For instance, we've been making
handcuffs since the 1930’s, and today we are the world's largest
manufacturer. And we don't just make products-we train police officers
to use them. We've been operating the Smith & Wesson Academy for
police-officer handgun training since 1969.
A history of responding to the needs of law enforcement.
We are one of the few companies that have been actively supplying
law enforcement since 1880. The famous .357 Magnum® revolver was
developed at the request of law enforcement officials in the 1930s who
were looking for a way to deal with more treacherous and better-armed
criminals. Handguns of the day could not penetrate the bullet-proof
glass and armor-plated vehicles that were growing in popularity. So
Smith & Wesson engineers innovated the .357 Magnum round and the
handgun that fired it to give police officers and F.B.I. agents the
stopping power they needed. That spirit of innovation and creativity
continues in today’s products, each one giving police officers
the sophisticated, high-tech tools they need to maintain public
safety, security and protection.
